DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS führt die Spieler durch die dramatischsten Ereignisse der Drei Königreiche, von der „Rebellion der Gelben Turbane" bis zur „Schlacht von Chibi". Als namenloser Held müssen sie Entscheidungen treffen, um den Frieden wiederherzustellen und das Schicksal des alten Chinas zu formen.
DYNASTY WARRIORS: ORIGINS bietet ein überwältigendes Gefühl von Realismus auf jedem Schlachtfeld, mit der bisher größten Anzahl von Soldaten in der Geschichte der Serie. Die feindlichen Soldaten greifen im Verbund an und sind äußerst schlagkräftig. Während man seine eigenen Fähigkeiten im Kampf einsetzt, muss man auch mit seinen Verbündeten vorstürmen, um den Weg frei zu machen. Sobald man das Feld stürmt und sich auf den Kampf vorbereitet, trifft man mit seinen Verbündeten auf Tausende von feindlichen Soldaten der gegnerischen Armeen und erlebt so ein Gefühl von Realismus und eine noch nie dagewesene Größe des Schlachtfelds.
Der Protagonist zieht an der Seite der Helden der Drei Königreiche in die Schlacht, um Schwärme von Feinden mit Schwertern, Fäusten und verschiedenen anderen Waffen zu vernichten. Zusammen reisen sie über eine riesige Weltkarte, nehmen an Missionen teil, schlagen Rebellionen nieder, retten Regierungstruppen und bestehen Scharmützel. Dabei treffen sie auf berühmte Charaktere wie Cao Cao und Liu Bei, die je nach Interaktion zu Verbündeten oder Feinden werden können.
